The Value of our Small Farms

The work of preserving small family farms is certainly not easy. The odds are stacked against small farms in so many ways. Yet, every time we set foot on the pasture of a Red Barn farm we are reminded of the value of small farms and our work to preserve them.

We recently spent some time with Red Barn farmer, Tim Busch, and his beautiful herd of Ayrshires. On this particular visit, we were introduced to one of Tim's cows, Rita. She was born deaf so she needed extra nurturing and protection as she grew. Tim and Rita have a special bond that has grown in her eight years under Tim's care. She is extra gentle, partially because she doesn't startle at noises, but also because she is valued and cared for individually.
